Underdog - A person or hand who is not the mathematical favorite to win.

When playing a hand of poker, one hand is almost always favored over another. Sometimes there is only a slight edge and other times a hand might be a huge favorite against another like AA against 99. Whoever is statistically the least likely to win the hand is the underdog.

Sometimes a hand can start out as the favorite and then turn into the underdog while the hand is in progress. Say for example two players are playing the above mentioned hand and the player with the 99 happens to hit a flop of 942. The player with the pair of aces is no longer the favorite and is now the underdog.

The term underdog is sometimes simplified to "dog."
