Poker TableIf you and your buddies have a regular home game, you may have thought about investing in your own poker table. There are many different types of poker tables on the market. Many people even choose to build their own. The choices can be overwhelming. This guide will help you choose the right table for you by identifying the different options available and describing the pros and cons of each choice.

What Types of Tables are Out There?

Table Tops
A table top is not actually a table, but a poker surface designed to fit on your dining table. It contains some neat poker features, like green felt and cup holders, and adds ambiance to your game. Table tops are highly portable and inexpensive ($50-$200).

Folding Tables
A folding table is a poker table that is designed to be stowed away when not in use. They also contain the classic poker features. Many are available in octagonal and elliptical shapes, which are more conducive to accommodating 8 to 10 players comfortably. Folding Tables are also portable and relatively inexpensive ($200-$500).

Convertible Tables
Convertible tables are designed to be multifunctional. You can be sitting at your dinning room table by day, then turn over your table and have a poker game by nights. They are usually very attractive and sturdy and are meant to be a permanent piece of furniture. As a result, convertible tables usually aren’t portable and are more expensive than folding tables ($500+).

Casino Quality Poker Tables
There are many retailers that will sell you the exact same types of poker tables found in casinos. These tables are highly functional and professional. ($1000+).

Make your Own Table
Many handy people have discovered that it is relatively easy to build your own casino quality poker table for a fraction of the cost of buying it yourself. ($100-$200).

What is Right for Me?

Each of the types of tables described above comes with their own set of trade offs. Determining which one is right for you depends on your priorities. Table tops are best for you if you require a high level of portability (for example, your home games travels from week to week) or if you don’t have a lot of money or space to invest in the table. Be aware, however, that tabletops can be awkward to play on if they don’t match the table. If you chose to invest in a tabletop, make sure you consider how it will match up with your table.

Folding Tables are good beginner tables. You may not yet want to devote space in your house or apartment to a poker table yet, so a folding table will let you bring it out and store it when you need it. They are also less expensive than other tables.

Convertible Tables are attractive tables. They will blend in with your home décor nicely. You will compromise some functionality for the attractiveness, however. Most convertible tables are smaller than other poker tables, so they do not hold as many people comfortably. Convertible tables are recommended for the casual player who is looking for a showpiece over a fully functional table.

Casino Quality Poker Tables are the only choice for the die-hard poker player that hosts regular games in his home or apartment. They are fully functional and professional and will last a long time. If you have the money and space to devote to this type of table, there are no other trade offs.

If you have the space but not the money, you should consider making your own table. There are many websites and DVD's devoted to teaching you how to make a poker table. There is even an Internet forum (Scott’s Poker Table Forum) where people post questions and advice on the subject.
