The
World Poker Tour held in Aruba should have been a great show considering the variety of players that were on it. The six players were
Mike "The Mouth" Matusow,
John Juanda, Dr. Vic Fey, Patrick McMillan, Erick Brenes and
Layne Flack. Instead of the show being great, it
was a series of suckouts and the suckouts eventually declared the winner.
Mike Matusow was the first person we see getting lucky. Layne raised the $50,000
big blind to $160,000 with
pocket Aces and Mike called with KJ.
The flop was K32 with two hearts. Layne bet $300,000, Mike moved all-in for $765,000 and Layne called. The turn was a queen of
hearts making three hearts on the board. Layne held the ace of hearts, so Mike was
drawing to a king or jack that wasn't a
heart. The river was an offsuit king and Mike jumped up and down letting everybody know that it was his turn to get lucky.
Mike's excitement lasted for a short time. A few hands after he eliminated Patrick in fourth place (Vic finished in sixth
and John finished in fourth), his luck changed. The first hand that he lost a lot of chips was when Layne called the
$120,000 big blind with QJ. Mike decided to get cute and
reraised to $520,000 with 8 high. Layne called the raise.
The flop was QT8. Mike bet $500,000 and Layne moved all-in in an instant. While Mike was sitting there thinking, Layne told him,
"Just ask me." Mike then said, "What do you have" and Layne replied, "I have you beat". Mike ended up folding his
bottom pair.

The next hand
we see, Mike called from the small blind with Q9 and Erick checked in the big blind with 86. The flop was Q85. Mike bet
$120,000, Erick moved all-in for
$1,115,000 and Mike called. Mike had Erick out chipped, but only by a hair. The turn was a three and the river was a six!!
Mike didn't even have enough for a big blind. He threw the last of his chips ($75,000) in on the next hand when he was on
the
button with pocket sixes. Erick called
$60,000 from the small blind with 74 and Layne checked in the big blind with T8. The flop was AQ7 and both
players
checked. The turn was another queen and they checked again. The river was a nine and it was checked once more. Erick won the
hand with a pair of sevens and Mike finished in third place.
The bad beats (or
suckouts depending what side of the coin you were on)
didn't stop there. The tournament was decided by one. Layne raised to $460,000 with pocket nines and Erick moved all-in. Layne made a great
read and called the all-in bet and was pleased to see
Erick turn up pocket deuces. The flop was A64 and the turn was a deuce giving Erick the
set. Layne only had two outs and neither one
showed up on the river. Erick won the tournament.
The one thing that I did like about this tournament was how Patrick conducted himself at the table. He wasn't screaming like
a madman when he got lucky or unlucky. He sat there like a gentleman and was gracious even when he got knocked out of the
tournament. I wish more young players conducted themselves like Patrick did.
