Gus Hansen was one of the final six players at the Bay 101
Shooting Stars tournament. Any tournament with Gus Hansen is a must see according to me. The other five players were Corey Cheresnick,
Men the Master Nguyen, Shandor Szentkuti, Danny
Nguyen (no relation to "The Master") and Jay Martens.
Gus was off to a great start when he picked up pocket queens and
reraised Jay and his A5 of spades. Jay folded and Gus
picked up the first pot. The next hand was a big one. Corey raised to $25,000 with JT of spades, Jay reraised to $65,000 with pocket queens
in the small blind and Corey called. The flop was 643 with two spades. Jay bet $75,000 and Corey called. The turn was a queen of spades giving Jay the
set and Corey the flush. Jay checked and Corey checked behind him!
The river was a jack of clubs. Jay bet $200,000, Corey moved all-in, and Jay called. After that hand, Corey was the new chip leader.
The next hand was a preview of how the tournament was going to be played in the future. Gus raised the $10,000
big blind to $28,000 with A7, Danny called from
the small blind with 43 of clubs, and Corey called with KT. The flop was AK2. Danny checked, Corey bet $100,000, Gus called, and Danny called.
The turn was a jack. Danny led out with a $100,000 bet, Corey folded, and Gus called. The river was a five giving Danny the straight. Danny
checked and Gus checked behind him. I am sure even Gus was surprised to see the hand Danny turned up.
Men
"The Master" was the first person eliminated even though he got his money in with the best of it. Danny raised to $40,000
with pocket jacks, Gus called from the small blind with A7, Men raised (all-in
for $445,000) with pocket queens, Danny called, and Gus folded. The flop was 632 and it was looking pretty good for Men, but
the turn brought a jack. If that wasn't bad enough, another jack came on the river giving Danny
quads. Danny not only won the hand, but he
won a $5,000 cash prize for knocking Men out. Men was one of the selected "bounties" in the tournament.
Corey lost a lot of his chips on the following hand; Corey raised to $50,000 with KQ, Shandor called with pocket sixes, and Gus called with AJ. The flop was QQ6 giving Corey
trips and Shandor a
full house. Corey bet $90,000,
Shandor called, and Gus folded. The turn was an eight. Corey moved all-in and Shandor called. The river was an ace and
Shandor ended up winning a pot over $1,200,000.
I have already mentioned two hands where Danny sucked out, but the
suckouts didn't stop there. On one
hand, Danny raised to $48,000 with T7 of spades and Corey called with Q8 of spades. The flop was J86. Danny bet $60,000 and
Corey moved all-in for $400,000. I figured Danny would fold, but he didn't. He called with his
gutshot straight draw and ended up hitting a ten
on the turn. He didn't have the straight, but he had a pair higher than Corey's. Not to worry, Corey resucked out on the river and the saga continued.

Windows - Mac
Corey didn't last long after that hand. Danny raised to the $40,000 big blind to $120,000 with 74 of diamonds from the small
blind and Corey called with J8. The flop was J72. Danny moved all-in with
second pair and Corey called with top pair.
The turn was a six of spades helping neither player, but the river was a 7 giving Danny three of a kind. Corey finished in fifth place.
Gus was having
a hard time playing his normal game. He actually had to make a hand and take a stand with it. He managed to double up by doing exactly that.
Danny raised to $120,000 with
AK and Gus called from the small blind
with KJ. The flop was J65 all diamonds. Neither player had a diamond in their hand. Gus checked, Danny moved all-in, and Gus
called. The turn was a ten and the river was another jack. Gus was now in a position to win the tournament, but he made a
horrible move that cost him a lot of chips. Danny called on the
button with pocket kings, Shandor called from the small
blind with 73 of hearts, and Gus raised from the big blind with K5 of spades. I am not sure what Gus was thinking when he made this move,
but I know he realized his mistake immediately. Danny moved all-in for $245,000 and Gus was pot committed and called. When the turn came, Gus was
drawing dead. Danny the
maniac had chips again.
The worst suckout on World Poker Tour history had to be the next hand shown. Danny moved all-in with A7 and Shandor called with AK. The flop was K55. Danny needed
runner runner to win the hand. The turn was one of his cards (a seven)
and the river was the other. Shandor only had $135,000 after that hand and he was eliminated by Danny on the next hand.
Gus tried to get in there and mix it up when the play got down to three people, but he couldn't really make anything work. On the first hand of the
three handed play, Gus got outplayed. Danny raised to $120,000 with 96 of hearts and Gus called with Q3 of diamonds. The flop was KQ7 and both
players checked. The turn was an
eight. Danny bet $160,000 and Gus called. The river was a six and Danny moved all-in. Gus thought for a short time and then
mucked his hand.
Gus lost some more of his chips when he raised to $110,000 with K9, Jay raised $200,000 more with AQ and Gus called. The
flop was 964. Jay checked, Gus bet $800,000 and Jay called. Gus thought he bet enough to put Jay all-in, but Jay actually
had $30,000 left after the call. The turn was an ace and Jay put the last of his chips in. Gus called and lost the pot when
he didn't improve his hand on the river. I don't understand why Jay called Gus' bet. If he wanted to get all of his chips in
on that hand, he should have moved all-in instead of calling all-in.
I was amused at Gus reaction on the next hand. Danny raised to $120,000 with 95 and Gus called with T7. The flop was 866.
Danny moved all-in and Gus called after a little thought. When Gus saw Danny's hand, he said, "I have the ten". It is not
often that we can see an all-in call with a board like that and have ten high being the best hand. Gus ended up winning the
hand. He was eliminated on the next hand shown. Gus raised to $120,000 with KT, Danny moved all-in with pocket nines and Gus
called. Gus said something to the effect of not losing races very often. He lost this one though and Danny not only won the
pot, but won another $5,000 bounty for knocking Gus out. Danny even had the nerve to ask Gus for an autograph on his "bounty" shirt.
The
heads up play only showed two hands.
Jay raised to $120,000 with KT and Danny called with A5. The flop was AT8. Danny bet $160,000 and Jay called. The turn was a
three of hearts making three on board and Jay had the king of hearts. Danny moved all-in and Jay called. The river was an
offsuit four and Jay was left with only $300,000 in chips. The final hand couldn't have ended any other way. Danny got his
money in with the worst of it (43) and Jay had K4. The flop was T92 all hearts. Danny had the four of hearts. The turn was a
seven of clubs and the river was a three. Danny made a pair of threes and won the event.
This episode of the World Poker Tour was the most poorly played poker I have seen on the show. More than half of the pots, I mumbled, "That
was sick" when all was said and done. One or two suckouts can make great television. Two hours of it made it almost unbearable to watch.
